Hi Everyone who loves the "babes". I am starting a Wisconsin chapter of the www.chemocaps.com group. We will be sending our hats, dolls and bears to Children's Hospital in Milwaukee, Wi. I need volunteer knitters to knit and send me "knitted babes", dudes and horses! I can not keep up with the demand, and NEED YOU! These dolls go to kids that require longterm inpatient cancer care. A nurse or caseworker has to request a doll for a patient, and these kids get so much out of it. YOU CAN HELP KIDS THROUGH A REALLY TOUGH TIME. My tribute to the beautiful soulful singers of the 70’s to now! Forever youthful and their music timeless!
Difficult to find just the right hair color. Tina had so many! Her high heeled shoes were made from a disgarded plastic wrapping, bent to shape…and a split sponge type ear plug. Knitted silver thread for the shoe tops and jewelry. Babe altered of course for that unstoppable figure of Tina’s.

My Suzy Q

I've finally finished a Knitted Babe to completion with wardrobe and everything! Her name is Suzy Q and she was really fun to create and design clothes for. I altered the Rudy's shirt pattern to create Suzy Q's teal peacock blue corduroy jacket, then added the tan fur collar and trim to jazz it up. In the second picture Suzy Q is showing the details on the backside of her dress, with vintage buttons, black grosgrain at the waste and black bias tape for the sleeves. The last picture is her little handbag I made from a scrap piece of fabric. It was my favorite part! It was about a 3"x6" rectangle with both sides sewn up, then the bottom corners sewn. It took a good hour to hem the top and get the leather cord through, then I glued green felt covered plastic canvas to the bottom. The flower was perfectly located!

He was much easier to make than I first thought, and I may make another one now.

He looks a little sad, but that's because he needs a friend.

I used rolled paper tubes in his legs to firm them up and he can stand by himself if positioned correctly.

I can see all my girls wanting one now.

I found this pic of all the babes I've made. From the left, in the panties, an unnamed babe made for an auction. I call her Trixie. Then in black hair is "Bow - or maybe Beau" named by my daughter. She was the first, and has had a makeover. Then Jack Sparrow, whom I've posted before. Then "Dorothy" and Ron Weasley (also posted here before) and in the front, baby Fairy. :) I'm working on another Fairy, and will be making a set of mermaids for my girls. I love these dolls!

"BABES FOR THE BRAVE"

Hi Everyone.

Putting out a plea to see if any of you would like to donate one or two or a few babes for this program.. We are desperately in need to fulfill the requests on behalf of adolescents and teens undergoing long term inpatient cancer treatment in the hospital and we are receiving lots of request from medical staff and social services involved in these kid's care.

It seems that knitted babes help them get through it all without alot of fuss and without feeling like a wuss and I guess it's because they are so cheery and bright and outrageous that it brings a smile to every adolescent and teen who has received theirs. Word gets out among the patients and more and more requests come in.............

I have been knitting as fast as I can but yes even I caught "The Big C" and have been very busy doing surgeries and scans and mri's and many tests and such. Yesterday I completed my first of many inpatient chemotherapy treatments and got a wig, have to shave my head and yes am knitting myself a chemocap too...............and so every third week I'll go into the hospital and do what I need to do and then the next two weeks work full time and knit those babes and chemocaps and bears and count my blessings that I am here, alive and kicking and able to contribute to and administer the programs which are so important.

Hi guys,

I am new to this blog... finally my toddlers have given me enough head space and time to join!

I have made quite a few Knitted Babes and I love them all!!! They have all been for my daughter Zoe and she plays with them all the time.

Princess I must admit thought, is not her favorite... which is kind of good, because I get to play with her, while my daughter plays with her own favorites: Molly and Gem:

Hello Babe-Knitters -

I posted a babe way back in July and now I have taken on the crazy project of knitting babe-maids for my wedding (in August). I am making seven "babes" and two "animal-babes" (tbd). I have two questions.

1. The complete babe that I have has a weak neck, so bad that she basically folds in half if she isn't proped agains something. I was given the suggestion of using a wooden spoon/plastic spoon for support. I was wondering if anyone has done this or if there are any other suggestions.

2. As it is now May and I have only five bodies completed I wondered if anyone had a suggestion for quick, cute dresses that care simple to make.

It has been a while since I've posted a new doll. But I managed to finish two knitted babes a few months ago and now they are ready to say hello to everyone. Meet Gweneth and Raquel they are the best of friends. Gweneth loves the outdoors and her favorite season is Spring. Raquel is really into fashion and loves to wear dresses. These two lovely ladies are new additions to my little gang of knitted dolls. These dolls are so much fun to make, I just wish I had more time to make more. After waiting about a hundred years (or since September anyway, when I was enlightened by my new roommate), I finally was able to see SPRING AWAKENING, the broadway musical! It was absolutely amazing, and I wish I could see it every day of my life..unfortunately I live in Wisconsin. But, before seeing the show I made a babe of my favorite character, Moritz Steifel. The current actor, Blake Bashoff, was able to sign it at the stage door after the show!...now if only I could get the original John Gallagher Jr. to sign him.... (as seen in the poster). Right now I just need to make a school uniform...

Here she is...I'm thrilled at how she turned out and how fast she worked up.

I made the lace granny panties so that she would never be naked.

The skirt is something I made up as I went and need to make a top or jacket/sweater. She also needs shoes, maybe a purse...I think I'll work on a wardrobe before I make a friend for her.

2 Babes and a Pirate!

Hey all! I made these dolls last year. The first one I did was the lighter skinned brunette doll for my daughter. The second was the orange-haired doll, for a gift. I wanted to make one for my son, so I modified the pirate to make him "Captain Jack Sparrow" from Pirates of the Caribbean. :)

My next dolls will be a Dorothy (from the Wizard of Oz - for my daughter) and Ron Weasley (from Harry Potter) for my younger daughter. I've also been asked to make one (or more) for an auction at my daughter's preschool.

HiI am a newcomer to this blog, and just bought the book ... I am excited to start! The pictures of your Knitted Babes inspire me.

I noticed that a couple of people said you used dpn. My book has the dolls knit on regular needles; can you give any hints on converting? Also, did you knit tubes for the arms and legs; the book shows the arms and legs as "curled in" strips but I think tubes would be cute. Any help appreciated, thanks!

This one is my daughters. She helped with the hair which took forever to plait.
This one came as a kit. I treat myself at Christmas and enjoyed every minute making her.

To a very, very, very special fan of Harry Potter that I have heard even looks like him! Harry has bright green eyes, hardly tamed black hair, and round black glasses! Of course his #1 fan must have authentic Harry Potter hat and glow in the dark glasses for Halloween night! My son is an avid fan too and says the first book he ever read and completed was the Sorcerer's Stone. Harry is enjoyed by everyone!

These adolescents and teens (boys as well as girls) are involved in the struggles of trying to survive cancer and are in hospitals for long periods of time trying to get through all that they do in order to hopefully survive.
Pre-teens and Teens don't want to appear childish but they sure do have a right to cry and scream and yell it's not fair but remember there's all that peer pressure. And yes even a big strapping 15 yr old boy wants a soft squishy doll to hug and hold without having to go in the closet to do so and a knitted dude and a knitted babe is anything but childish..................It's way cool and so far all these big kids are proud to have to hold and have to show off their knitted babe and dude.

On behalf of each of the big kids who has received or who will receive a knitted dude or knitted babe of their own to help keep away the gremlins and ghosts of scary treatments, horrible side effects and the cancer itself, I say a very big thank you one and all to those who knit up and donate a dude or babe for this program.

Mom and I had a great time making these Brave Babes. (blonde by Gigi, brunette by Sheryl) We also made pink nighties to go into a suitcase for each one. I love how each babe chooses it's own personality. We hope to make a couple of Brave Boys next.

New Clothes!

I haven't posted here in quite a long time but I haven't forgotten about my Babe. This August, I knit her a pretty ridiculous hat (I made the pattern up as I went) and a wrap sweater (pattern in the book, I had to mess around with it a bit though so that it would be the right size). The sweater was made with the same yarn as the dress and they look cute together.

I also made her an entirely new outfit yesterday. I knit her a sleeveless shirt out of some novelty yarn and sewed (yes, sewed) her a pair of jeans (I used the pattern from the book for Flo Tilly's sweatpants). I still need to hem the waistband but I think I'll leave the bottom of the pant legs as they are.

Now that I know I can hand sew something without totally botching it, I might try sewing something else. I'm also thinking of making her another pair of shoes as I've lost her other pair.

Georgia P. who is knitting up a "Harry Potter Knitted Dude" for a 10 yr old dude with cancer. He's a real Harry Potter fan and his nurses say he could be a harry potter double so I know he is going to be thrilled with his pal.

All the way from the U.K our dear friend Charlotte sends that fabulous red head babe who's photo she just posted and this will be going to a little girl with carrot color hair who likes hot hot colors and who has cancer.

Brenda "the analyzing knitter" has sent me FiFi who is in the loving arms of a teenage gal who is battling cancer.

I see Marti has posted she's wanting to send that gorgeous blonde babe and I know of a wonderful adolescent gal with cancer struggles who is going to love her.

Babes in the Pacific Northwest

Hi all, I am Val and I live in Seattle, WA. I love looking at all your beautiful creations! Thank you for sharing. Here are some of mine.
This first picture is Cecily (on the left) and Nikki. Cecily was my first Babe, she's a little teatime and garden loving lady who would love to have you all over for Earl Gray and cookies.

Nikki is a barefoot wild child who runs amok and makes a party wherever she goes. She loves going to Cecily's for tea, but always insists on an interpretive dance session before they sit down and be dainty. I had to knit her a swimsuit to keep her from skinny-dipping.

Both girls and their stuff were knitted mostly from Patons Grace, although a couple other yarns of similar weights were used.

This next pic is of the cowgirl and her wild mustang who will be going to my niece for Christmas. I think this cowgirl is Cecily's older sister, there certainly is a family resemblance. The horse is from Dream Toys, all the knitting is worsted weight yarn (Red Heart Soft, I believe)- making the doll a tad big, so I enlarged the patterns for the hat (Dream Toys) and the boots (from Knitted Babes). The little dress is from Knitted babes, but I did alter the pattern to make it longer. Sweater, chaps and pistol with holster are from the cowboy in Dream Toys.

So Fun! I had never knit successfully before until I came across Claire's books a few months ago-I immediately fell in love with the Babes and had to learn, of course! Now that I know how to knit, I'm starting to get family requests for sweaters, hats, etc. Yeah, right. Knitting little people is much more fun!

Babes for the Brave

This here's a babe I made a while ago, just for the sake of making a babe, cuz we all know that it's a hoot. I had no one in particular in mind to give her too, just had some time on my hands and the desire to create. I used some novelty yarn for her hair, which turned out really funky and fun.

I got a little waylaid by life and never did get around to making her any clothes. She sat, naked, at the bottom of my 'In Progress' box next to the couch, all but forgotten. I thought that perhaps if I got around to it, I'd make her a few outfits and give her to my neice for Christmas.

Then I came across the post on the blog here looking for babes for young teens battling cancer. I knew then that my babe was destined for good things.

I threw together a little outfit for her and now she's ready to make her big journey. I hope she bring someone out there a little comfort and joy.

Knitted Babes For A Cause!!!!!!!!!

Hi Everyone.

I'm in need of your help and hoping a few of you compassionate knitters will answer the call.
My name is Ronni Lynn Spoll and I am the administrator of www.chemocaps.com which is the largest charitable knitting program for cancer patients in the world, and it is the largest because of knitters like you.

This program supplies hand knit chemocaps complimentary for children, adolescents, teens and adults in hospitals and cancer treatment centers everywhere..... I also receive emails from medical personnel and social service agencies for handknit bears for children who have none and are in hospitals in crisis situations.

Recently I had a few special requests from oncology nurses on behalf of two teenage cancer patients who were rooming together while struggling through chemotherapy as inpatients. Apparently one of the gals received from someone the "Knitted Babes" book and not wanting to appear childish but wanting a soft "grown up looking" doll of her own to cling to, she requested a knitted babe doll....................but from who.....nobody she knew, knew how to knit and this gal was definitely too sick to learn.
The nurse manager emailed me to see if I could fulfill this wish and my good friend Brenda (The Analyzing Knitter Blog) http://analyzingknitter.typepad.com/ came to the rescue. She had received the Dot Pebbles "FIFI" kit and knit it up and mailed it to me to have delivered to this gal. Her roomie wanted "PINKY PAINTER" and I ordered that kit and knit it up and had it delivered to her................I also bought the "MERMAID" kit which I am knitting up right now because I have a 13 yr old cancer patient who will love having her to be by her side.

I now have the book "Knitted Babes" and I intend to knit up a few with some simple but colorful knit long sweaters (like a sweater dress) and matching knit boots to fit over their legs so that whenever a request comes in I can overnight mail the knitted babe so these kids won't have to wait because they might not have the time to wait

Brenda (see her aug.06 post to see FIFI all knit up and ready to go to a teenage cancer patient in need of her)
suggested I post a note here and ask if any of you would be willing to send to me a knitted babe to have on hand and at the ready so that there will be a supply on hand for those adolescents and teen cancer patients who request one.

And while we're on the subject, has anyone ever knit up a Knitted Babe Boy? If anyone would like to knit up one it would be very much appreciated because I know word is getting around on that adolescent oncology floor where those two gals have theirs and already I am hearing from one of the nurses that there are a few boys as well as girls who would like to have one too..........I think at this point in their lives, these kids need a soft non-threatening friend that isn't childish looking and is quite hip and cool to cling too.

Hello! I realized when I started typing out this post that I don't actually have any good photos of my "finished" babe to post! Alas! But here is the best one I've got --

She has a face now, button eyes and mouth, but I haven't gotten any more recent photos. I love seeing all of the pictures you guys post here too, they give me lots of ideas!

I've got a question though ... I am working on another doll (not a babe, but still cute!) and I'd like to give her curly red hair. The best I can think of is to find a boucle yarn that has some crimp to it, but that's not exactly what I'm looking for. Have any of you ever tried to give your babe curly hair? Do you have any ideas?

Just wanted to share with ya'll about my big prize! I entered my own Babe in my county fair and she won Grand Champion!! I entered something in every knitting category except one (not counting the felted categories either), so she was judged against many other blue ribbons I won for this prize. The ladies at the fair were just tickled when they saw her. 'We' even made the newspaper!

Yes....At twelve midnight I was one of the crazy nuts waiting for the final Harry Potter book. Loyal fans who stood in line were given glow in the dark Harry glasses. I didn't start reading of course until the morning and many copies were easily available at the bookstores. No time to go to band practice and hang out with the guys or even see the 'babes.' I have to read and find out what happens to Harry and 'you know who'!

Hi ~ Here is my "Lake Babe", she is my first babe and is a first birthday gift for my neice. She is currently nameless but she responds to "Babe". Perhaps she will get a new name once my neice learns to talk!!

Babe likes sitting in the sun by the lake, attending birthday parties and having her hair done. She was knit on a size 5 needle (my gauge was all screwy). She is looking forward to the creation and birth of her pet octopus.

Hi - I am a newbie and I have a kindof completed babe. She has her body, arms & legs all done and sewn together. The problem that I am having is that she can't hold her head up! I saw some other people have put wooden spoons in for support but my babe is going to a just turned 1-year-old and I know she will need to be washed.

Here's the latest...Marguerite. She's not based on anyone in particular, but rather just evolved on her own, directed by the yarn and the shape it eventually took. She enjoys Cuban music. I plan to knit her a pair of maracas to play.

I was on the web looking for Knitted Babes errata (which I found none) and found the link to the UK Dot Pebbles website. Have you been there? They have new kits and one is pulling at me to buy. The kit includes supplies to make everything except the Babe herself.

Look at her teddy! I am in LOVE.
The only thing keeping me from hitting PayPal is the price, that converts to $60.15 US. ouch! I haven't ordered my Dream Toys book yet, can anyone tell me if there is a teddy bear in the book? Maybe I can ask for this kit for Christmas.....a very long wait.

Hi everyone. I recieved my Palette yarn from knit picks - and I love the colors! I also got size 3 single point needles from Joann's and ordered size 2 and 2.5 from online (for making the clothes). I started my first Babe using the size 3 needles (to check a guage). My gauge with this yarn using #3 needles is: 1 inch = 7.5 stiches and 9.5 rows (right at the recommended gauge for the pattern in the book).

Now here's where I am a little uncertain (confused). When reading the book - on page 23 - it shows the body width to be 3.25 inches (perhaps 3.5 before sewing together). However, the directions on page 26 say to cast on 18 stiches. My body with 18 stiches is only 2.5 ish inches wide and in order to get the desired 3.5 inches width I will need to cast on 25 stiches. So . . . my question is: is the book incorrect on page 26 and should I cast on enough stiches to get a body width of 3.5 inches? Or should I not be concerned and make a skinny little babe with a 2.5 inch body width (won't her head look really big?) ?

I would be very interested to know what you have done , what your results were, and your thoughts.

Fairy Fred

(Wini)Fred is now on her way to make a little girl's Birthday wish come true. I made her (similar to my first attempt) using the same needles as the pattern requests, no gauge swatches (tut tut), pink bargain dk for body etc, and for the light pink (hair) and dark pink (dress) found one ball of each colour of Elle's Velluto in a bargain bin. She wanted an 'up-do' so has a floppy quiff, and for the observant, yes her wings are on upside down but I found the weight of the felt decoration the "correct" way round just meant they folded over and curled into nothing.

I've found if I use my cast off edge as the top of the arms and legs, this adds a natural slant that enables the appendages to hang more readily.

The thing I really struggle with is the mouth, my 'little' running stitch looks a bit like a row of etched teeth, but with another mermaid requested, I shall try again!

Hello all,
This babe is for my 7 year old niece and has not been named yet. (One idea she had was Chloe which I love). I was surprised at how quickly she knit up but had some trouble with attaching hair and limbs. Also had trouble finding fingering weight yarn in a flesh tone! So I used 100% mercerized cotton in more of a sport weight. Since I'm not great at gauge or adjusting patterns I'm a little worried about getting her clothes to fit right but the entire process has been really fun and everyone who has seen her is really impressed, which is nice! The best part was going through the book with my niece and talking about what she wanted her doll to look like. She choose the pink hair by the way. I chose the "Read" sticker as I am a librarian and want this babe to promote reading!
I've been keeping up with the knit-along for ideas ... this blog is so inspiring! If anyone has tips for yarn, hair, and limb attachment I would love to hear from you as I plan on making more babes!

Sally the Seductress...and her nails.

The day was absolutely flawless. Crystal blue skies and no fog in site, which is a rare commodity in this coastal town. The beaches were packed with sun worshippers from all around the bay area. Sally found it hard to part with this beautiful day and so she continued to sunbathe on her front porch. Reading Claire Garland's new book Dream Toys and a manicure was all Sally needed to make this a perfect day. Her feet and hands were knitted as indicated in the book with a few changes. As you get to toward the last 6 rows increase by one, then two stitches to create the widening of the hands. For her toes, I also single crocheted on the last row to add a more rounded edge. Alittle beige color thread to define the edges of the toes and fingers, optional but helps to flatten them. Felting small pieces of pink roving to round circles on the hands and feet make a dimentional surface for the nails. If you look closely, Sally's nose is felted too to a petite round mound. A few stitches to the back of the ankes allow her feet to look more natural. The ideas are countless of what you can create with the knitted babes!

Bikini-Babe

Ohh - the weather is really warm here in Norway. We're all defrosting after the winter. My babe got a new bikini yesterday. (I cut out pieces of felt, and crocheted around the edges.)

Of course the pink bikini matches the colour of her lipstick.

She also have name - finally. My sister Kirsten suggested the name Penelope - and a Penelope she is!

Hi - I am brand new to the blog and have been enjoying looking at all of your beautiful and creative babes. You are so talented! And so nice to share your ideas, your Babes, and your informaiton/insights. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of this fabulous group!

I finally ordered the Knitted Babes book - and it should arrive on Monday. I opted out of ordering any kits at this time because the cost was about $60 US dollars - and when I did a preview of the book - I preferred the clothing options in the book. However I do need some help. Can anyone shed some light on these questions? (I can't wait for the book! - and I am interested in your thoughts based on your own experiences).

1. Can a brand new never before knitter make a babe? I am going to spend sometime with my daughter (adult) - she has never knitted - and I was going to take the supplies for each of us to make a Babe while I was there. Do you think this is too advanced for someone who has not knitted before - or could I take some scrap yarn - teach her to cast on, knit and purl, and bind off - and then she'd be able to proceed with some help? (I am an experienced knitter)

2. I noticed that someone said there are basic knitting directions in the book. Is this enough or should I get her another basic book. What other book would you recommend?

3. What are you thoughts on the kits? Are they worth the $60 - in terms of time to purchase supplies, cost of supplies, etc.?

Perdi Bird

I finally finished the Dot Pebbles Perdi Bird kit I got for christmas. I think it looks very cute, and my sewing has improved a bit. The only thing I had trouble with was the apple green for the shoes. There was NOT at all enough of the apple green yarn to make the apples or finish the shoes. I improvised and just didn't make the soles, (sewing the fronts up into mini socks and connecting the white tweed to that). I found the rosette hard to make, however, I think it looks fairly nice. Tell me what you think!

Sally sits on her front porch. Its a typically overcast gray skied day in the small coastside town of Pacifica, California. The ocean view lies behind her. Ho...hum... what to do on such a gloomy day! She wears a light blue brimmed sun hat and a matching blue knitted halter top. Blonde braided strands of yarn are hung as glittery golden beads fall over her shoulders. Sally is sitting upright without falling due to a styrofoam tubing claimed from my son's guitar holder that is inserted in the neck. Her nails are dark dusty pink, made by felting them on with wool roving and toe nails to match of course. Pastel pink and white slippers adorn her tiny feet and are attached by velcro never to be misplaced.
Temperatures are cool today, maybe another day to go to the beach......

Princess Anne plus group shots.

Greetings friends! I'd like to introduce Princess Anne. While educated in the courtly arts such as conversation, diplomacy, swordplay, and ballroom dance, Princess Anne can't help being a modern girl. She caused a royal scandal by modeling underwear, and recently took on an acting job in a feature role as Gooney Bird Greene. She also explored the idea of being a bald pop princess, but it didn't stick. Although Princess Anne is in a bit of an exploratory phase right now, she's very good-hearted and shows promise to settle down into the life of a well-behaved princess who will have the will and power to make positive changes in the world.

I'd also like to share a few group shots. The first illustrates a day at school, when my daughter rounded up all sorts of girls to go to class. The second is the complete collection of Knitted Babes. A few shipped off to their new home, and will receive a more formal introduction later.

This is Rita, my 5th babe. She just left me and now lives with my niece. My three first babes also have moved to other nieces. (They left in a hurry before Chrismas, so I forgot to take a photo of them.)

Greta (naked)

This is Greta. She is a spicy, long-haired diva who loves to play the piano! Her arm span amazes her teacher. She has no clothes but the socks on her feet, for now (she spent all of her extra cash on the piano lessons!). Her head is made with the girl pattern in Dream Toys so it is a little more round/heart-shaped than most of her peers.

She was knit on size 3mm needles which I got with my dot pebbles kit. I believe that this size is a bit inbetween a size 2 and 3. This worked perfectly because the yarn was a bit thicker than I'm accustomed, and I believe a tad larger than fingering weight. I'm not sure about this, however, because Greta turned out the same size as my other dolls, knit on regular size 2 needles and fingering weight.

If you want the pattern for the socks, please comment and I will write back ASAP.

I am tooting my own horn about this little beauty. I have temporarily named her Bella. She is a birthday present for a friend's little girl this coming weekend. I loved how she turned out. I tried something new with the way I attach a Babe's hair. The tutu wasn't bad to add, it was the little ballerina slippers that gave me the most trouble. After 3 tries I finally had a pair that fit. I plan to make a carry bag for her and all her possessions.
Such fun!

A Princess For My Princess

Hi My Name is Sharon and here is my first Babe who my daughter aptly named Princess Rose. Since I am allergic to all things woolen Rose was knit with Rowans 4 ply cotton #112 Opaque. Her hair is also cotton, a very lovely deep, dark rich chocolate brown obtain by a very generous donation from one of my knitting group member's private stash. I plan on making her the very cute dress in the book but at the moment she is sporting a very lovely skirt of my own design and a lovely felt top.

Jaeger Baby Merino substitution

Knitted Babe yarn - I have not been able to purchase Jaeger Baby Merino in the US or on the internet for sale. My local yarn shop has suggested that I try to knit with DMV #3 Embroidery cotton. I've research this blog and found that some knitters have substituted Knit Picks 'Palette' yarn but I'm reluctant to try this beautiful 100% Peruvian yarn because it felts when machine washed. My grandaughter could decide to wash her 'Babe' and end up with a finger puppet-sized doll! Do you know where I can purchase Jaeger Baby Merino which Claire uses in her 'Babe' kits? Do you think that knitting with embroidery cotton will be the same gauge as fingering merino? Any suggestions would really be appreciated! Thank you!

Fairy Baby

Here's the latest addition to the family- the Fairy Baby. She must be magic, since I did her hair with some leftover Kid Silk Haze, and she looked all stringy and bedraggled: a bit like a Trainspottingesque toy. Then putting her away overnight to mull the fix-it plan, I awoke to found her hair had puffed up into a proper bouffant and so I am pleased with her.

Bella the Unicorn

Reading over alll of the posts last night motivated me to finish this unicorn. I have named it Bella. As you can see, she likes to play in the flowers.

Her mane is made out of Angora, and is very soft, however a bit static-y at times. Bella's body, hooves and snout is Zora Merino. I knitted her on size 5s just as the pattern called for. Once I learn how to crochet, I will make her a blanket and saddle according to the Dream Toys book, though I may get impatient and just improvise.

Hi, I'm Maribeth!

I made all of these babes over the past summer and fall. Unfortunately, I have no new pictures of my most recent. The darkest one was my first. I did not name any of these, as some I did not want to become overly attached to because I gave them away for Christmas presents to some distant cousins. Soon I will take pictures of my newer dolls. They have been made using the pattern in the book Dream Toys, which if nobody has noticed, has a slightly shorter head because the increases are on both the purl and knit side. I also am in the process of making a Perdi Bird from the kit I received last Christmas. I know, I can't believe I haven't finished it yet! All of the clothes are done, and body pieces, I just must knit and sew the legs, arms, and face.

The horse in the Dream Toys book was quite a distraction, which is my excuse for not finishing the Perdi Bird doll. I made this horse to give to my step-cousin, and am in the process of finishing a white unicorn for myself.

Ella, Belle (sneaking in from 'Toys to Sew') and their sister Rainbow-Tinkerbell were desperate to join the party and so stopped their busy schedule of making new friends, going to school, joining in on ballet classes, visiting the shops, travelling in the car, bumping down the stairs...to pose for their extended family.

They are awaiting the next offering from the Making Fairy, Rainbow Tinkerbell is hoping it will be her dress, since it is a little cold away from Fairyland!

They are really pleased to meet you all, and are very proud to be part of such a great looking family (they've been peaking over my shoulder at you all).

She's not really tanning though (I should hope that would be obvious). Her hair is just drying. I braided her hair, knotted it up and then wet it down, hoping that it will dry curly.
She's also sporting an all new outfit. I made her skirt a little while ago but I only just sewed in the ends. I also decided I like the skirt better with the purl side out. The tank top was made just yesterday though. I hope you can tell the pink blotch on the shirt is a heart (I didn't do the colorwork very well).

I made up the patterns for the shirt and skirt myself (I didn't writr them out either, I just made them up as I went). The shirt is made of leftover yarn (the green is from the striped dress) and the skirt is made from some leftover Noro Kureyon.
By the way, I've noticed a trend in her wardrobe. (sandals, dress, skirt, tank, swim-suit) She's very summery! I kind of like that though. When I let her hair out and see the results, I'll post again. Adios!

Babes on the Beach

Hello, I've been following the knitted babe-along for a while now and have really been enjoying everybody's posts! I've been too behind in my UFO's to actually contribute until now. I'm finally finished my third and best Babe who I've named "Marina".

She is 99.9% made from the Dream Toys pattern with the exception of the ruffles. I just couldn't bring myself to cast on all those stitches on such tiny needles that were called for on the ruffles. Instead, I improvised and did a simple crochet shell ruffle (which turned out just fine, I think).

I made my first Knitted Babe for my 2 year old daughter Zora. She is a ballet fanatic, and adores Tullah:

After making her, I quickly realized that I needed to do something about her neck. Zora flings her around like a Prima Donna Ballerina, doing flips and twirls and leaps. I opened her back up and inserted a wooden spoon inside of her, as a spine. It was a bit hard doing it this way, as I had embroidered her features on through her head - I had to work around those stitches a bit. But, it worked, and Tullah still has perfect posture.

I vowed I would be making many many more, and then I lost steam after Tullah. But then a 5 year old friend of Zora's invited us to her "Under the Sea" birthday party, and I got the idea to make this one:

She is just based on the design of the babes - not the pattern. I knitted her in the round, but did her head shaping the same shape as the Babes, and her features imitate the babes. I just faked the tail. Oh, and she is tiny, as you can see. This time I went down a needle size for the neck, and it worked beautifully! I actually made 2 identical mermaids, because Zora insisted on one of her own. The girl loves dolls.
Every time we look at this KAL blog, Zora screeches, "I wanna bring that one home!"
I have to explain to her that you all made those, and we can't have them. She wants me to make her one of each that we see. I am currently thinking about a fairy from Dream Toys, but maybe in a bigger gauge, so that she is larger.

Newbie with question.....

Hello all, I am new to this blog. I just came across it the other day. I bought this book last year and made two dolls one for each of my daughters. The question I have is about the needles. Do you guys knit them with the needles that the book says or did you have to change them? I knit them first without checking my gauge (I have never had a problem before) and came up with two dolls that are smaller than they should be. So now I am doing a gauge with size 3 needles. I just wanted to know if anyone has had issues with the size needles or if it's just me. I am afraid I going to have to frogg it. My first ever. Thanks, Stacey
